Leeds United boss Garry Monk bemoans "critical moments" in Newcastle United loss

Garry Monk believes that several "critical moments" were key in Leeds United slipping to a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Garry Monk has bemoaned a number of "critical moments" that he believes were key in Leeds United slipping to a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United.

Dwight Gayle scored twice as the Magpies won at Elland Road in the Championship on Sunday, but the Leeds boss was left frustrated after the referee failed to point to the spot when Jack Colback appeared to handle a Ronaldo Vieira cross just before half time.

The hosts had already fallen behind after Rob Green's error on 23 minutes, and Monk told Sky Sports News: "We gave them a goal, and obviously against a good side as well it makes it difficult. [It was] a clear-cut penalty for us we felt, and you give that decision and it's a totally different game.

"I thought we competed well and we had our chances to score goals. I'm happy with my team's effort but we're disappointed with the result.

"I said before the game that nothing would change for us in terms of what we're doing here and how we're approaching everything. I think today the difference was those critical moments that matches are decided on, and we fell on the wrong side of them today."

The result puts Leeds seventh in the Championship table.
