Cesare Prandelli's side had started brightly and took the lead through Stephan El Shaarawy, who latched onto a pass from Riccardo Montolivio to fire past Hugo Lloris.

Italy's lead lasted less than a minute as France responded almost instantly through Mathieu Valbuena.

The Marseille playmaker evaded two challenges on the left wing before cutting inside and curling home an equaliser.

Andrea Pirlo came on in the second half and nearly released Mario Balotelli with a measured pass but a crucial interception from Lloris prevented an effort on goal.

Didier Deschamps made a change of his own with 20 minutes remaining, bringing off Olivier Giroud for Gomis.

The Lyon target man wasted no time in making an impact, sliding home from close range after neat work from Jeremy Menez and Patrice Evra out wide.

Alessandro Diamanti and Sebastian Giovinco came close to restoring parity in the closing stages but France held on to secure an impressive victory.
