Top five Milan derbies of the 2000s

Ahead of tomorrow's Milan derby, Sports Mole looks back on five of the most memorable clashes between Inter Milan and AC Milan since 2000.

Tomorrow evening, rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan will meet at the San Siro to contest the Derby della Madonnina.

The history books are littered with memorable encounters between the two, which made picking out a select five nigh on impossible.

So, to help us out, Sports Mole has whittled it down to the best quintet of Milan derbies that have been played out since the turn of the millennium.

1. Inter Milan 0-6 AC Milan, May 2001
Not only did the Milan duo have to watch on as Roma won the Serie title in 2001, but neither was able to even finish in the top four. It meant that when they met on this occasion, no more than a place in the next campaign's UEFA Cup was up for grabs. What followed was a record-breaking night for the Red and Blacks as they struck six unanswered goals. Gianni Comandini scored twice - his only domestic goals for AC - while there was also a brace for Andriy Shevchenko. Further goals from Federico Giunti and Brazilian winger Serginho completed the rout, which still remains the biggest winning margin in a Milan derby.

2. Inter Milan 1-1 AC Milan, May 2003
A place in the final of the Champions League was up for grabs this time around, with the opening leg having been a drab 0-0 affair. The return meeting was much more entertaining, with Shevchenko putting AC not just 1-0 up, but the Ukrainian also ensured that his side had an away goal to fall back on. It would prove to be a vital strike because although Obafemi Martins drew Inter level, their failure to score again meant that they fell short. Meanwhile, AC went on to lift the trophy courtesy of a victory over fellow Italians Juventus on penalties at Old Trafford.

3. AC Milan 3-2 Inter Milan, February 2004
When the referee blew the whistle for the break, it appeared that goals from Dejan Stankovic and Cristiano Zanetti had sealed all three points for Inter. However, with the words of manager Carlo Ancelotti ringing in their ears, AC rallied and drew themselves level thanks to goals from Jon Dahl Tomasson and Kaka. Then, when it appeared that the spoils were going to be shared, Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf unleashed an unstoppable strike from distance which earned AC all three points.

4. Inter Milan 3-2 AC Milan, December 2005
Going into this clash, Roberto Mancini's Inter had not beaten their neighbours in eight attempts. So, when goals from AC's Shevchenko and Jaap Stam cancelled out strikes scored by Adriano and Martins, it appeared that the sequence of results was going to be extended to nine matches. Inter were not going to be denied, though, and with just seconds of stoppage time left to play, Brazilian frontman Adriano rose highest inside the penalty area to guide a header into the net.

5. AC Milan 0-4 Inter Milan, August 2009
The 2009-2010 season was just one game old when these two squared up against each other. Inter could only manage a draw with Bari on the opening day, so AC could have put five points between the teams with a victory. Jose Mourinho had other ideas, though, as he sent his side out to attack from the first whistle. His positivity was rewarded with goals from Thiago Motta, Diego Milito, Maicon and Stankovic, while further salt was rubbed in the AC wound when midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was handed his marching orders.
