Roberto Martinez: 'Romelu Lukaku still short of fitness'

Everton boss Roberto Martinez claims that Romelu Lukaku is still short of match fitness.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has admitted that Romelu Lukaku is still short of being 100% fit.

The Belgium international arrived back to Goodison Park late on in the summer after his exploits at the World Cup, and the powerful striker struggled with a toe injury in the first few weeks of the campaign.

Martinez thinks that his centre-forward is not yet in peak condition, but believes that more game time will see him reach full fitness.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "Rom's still getting fit. Physically we need to get him 100%.

"Coming back from the World Cup is always difficult for any player, especially for him, a player who needs to be full of power and full of aerobic pace.

"We haven't got him there yet, but the games will help. We play on Thursday and we've got another game on Sunday and before he goes back to Belgium [for the international break] we can get him back to full fitness."

Lukaku became the Toffees' club-record signing when they paid Chelsea £28m for him in the summer.
