Everton duo Phil Jagielka, Tim Howard doubtful for Newcastle United clash

Everton boss Roberto Martinez admits that his side will probably be without Tim Howard and Phil Jagielka against Newcastle United at St James' Park on Sunday.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has conceded that Tim Howard and Phil Jagielka are likely to miss his side's Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Both players were substituted at half time in the Toffees' defeat to Stoke City at Goodison Park as the keeper sustained a calf injury, while the defender was suffering from an ankle problem.

Joel Robles and Antolin Alcaraz are ready to replace the pair at St James' Park if they are unable to start against the Magpies after playing the second 45 minutes against the Potters.

Martinez told reporters: "Tim has pulled his calf and we'll have to assess him in the morning. I think it is unlikely he'll be available for Newcastle.

"Phil Jagielka has had an incident with his ankle where I'd say he's stretched his ligaments. We'll take a look but I think he will also miss Sunday."

Everton are 12th in the Premier League following their loss to Stoke on Boxing Day.
