Anthony Lopes suggests that the second-half fracas in Lyon's meeting with Everton was a good thing as it 'woke up the home fans'.

Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes has insisted that the melee that marred his side's 2-1 win over Everton in the Europa League was "no big deal".

The incident occurred during the second half of Thursday evening's clash at Goodison Park, sparked by a needless shove from home skipper Ashley Williams on Lopes.

Both sets of players came face to face near the barriers at the Howard Kendall Gwladys Street End, with one supporter - clutching a child in his arms - appearing to lash out at the visiting keeper.

Merseyside Police confirmed on Friday morning that the incident is being looked into further, but Lopes is happy to simply move on, even suggesting that it was a good thing for the game.

"It was no big deal, it happened and that was it," Sky Sports News quotes him as saying. "For me it seemed to wake up the fans and they seemed to love it.

"I don't think it is part of the English atmosphere to hit an away player, but it was like this. But I am proud that we were strong at 1-1 we won the game despite everything. It was a very proud night for us."

Williams was only cautioned for his part in the fracas, though further punishment for both teams is likely when UEFA takes action.
