Interim England manager Gareth Southgate claims that he has proved himself on the biggest stage during his four-match spell in temporary charge of the team.

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate has claimed that he has proved himself on the big occasions during his four-match spell in charge of the team.

Since taking over from Sam Allardyce in September Southgate has won two and drawn two of his matches, including Friday's 3-0 win over Scotland and 2-2 draw with Spain this evening that saw his side squander a two-goal advantage in the dying stages.

The former Under-21 boss admits that he has "no idea" when a decision will be made over his long-term future, but dropped his strongest hint yet that he is keen to continue with the senior side.

"I've loved doing it. It's not my decision. We're proud of what we've done in the situation and tonight's performance was special," he told ITV Sport.

"I've proved that I can handle big occasions. Until this run, under this spotlight, and in matches like Friday's against Scotland under intense pressure, you're never sure how it is going to be. I'm pleased and I think the remit we were given has been fulfilled.

"I've no idea [when a decision will be made]. We've got a European Under-21 Championship next summer and the draw is being made next month. I need to know where I'm going to park my car for the next few weeks!"

Southgate is the heavy favourite to land the job on a permanent basis.
