Inverness Caledonian Thistle land Scottish Challenge Cup

Carl Tremarco scores a 93rd-minute winner as Inverness Caledonian Thistle land the Scottish Challenge Cup with a 1-0 victory over Dumbarton.

Carl Tremarco scored a 93rd-minute winner as Inverness Caledonian Thistle landed the Scottish Challenge Cup for a second time in their history with a 1-0 victory over Dumbarton on Saturday afternoon.

Dumbarton, who were playing in their first national cup final for 121 years, began brightly as Grant Gallagher had a shot deflected behind for a corner just two minutes into the game, but the resulting set piece went harmlessly out of play.

Both sides traded blows as the game went on - Dumbarton captain Andy Dowie making two crucial interceptions to keep Caley at bay, while at the other end, Iain Russell fired into the side-netting.

On 23 minutes, Christopher McLaughlin's drilled ball across goal was helped on by Gallagher for the semi-professional side, but the opposition goalkeeper remained untroubled.

Although Dumbarton were on top, Inverness stepped up a gear towards the end of the first half but neither side could break the deadlock come the half-time whistle.

Inverness were the team pressing in the second period, but they passed up a huge chance to take the lead in the 83rd minute when Iain Vigurs missed from the penalty spot.

Inverness were not to be denied, however, with full-back Tremarco netting from close range in the third minute of stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes to secure the title in dramatic circumstances.

INVERNESS (4-4-2): Ridgers; Seedorf, Warren, Donaldson, Tremarco; Mulraney (Doran 71'), Polworth, Vigurs, Chalmers; Oakley, Bell (Mackay 78')
