Ipswich Town dump out Doncaster Rovers after extra time

David McGoldrick and James Alabi are on target in extra time as Ipswich Town knock Doncaster Rovers out of the League Cup.

Ipswich Town found the net three times in extra time to see off League One side Doncaster Rovers in the second round of the League Cup this evening.

The Tractor Boys piled on some early pressure as Larsen Toure's corner deflected towards the hosts' goal in the fifth minute, forcing goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann into a save.

Ipswich threatened again in the 13th minute through David McGoldrick, who weaved his way into the penalty area and let fly, testing Stuckmann from close range.

McGoldrick tried his luck again in the 17th minute, lashing an effort wide of the mark from 20 yards.

Doncaster took the lead against the run of play in the 23rd minute, Andy Williams nodding home a cross from close range after Ipswich failed to clear a free kick.

Ipswich went in search of an equaliser, and they almost found one minutes before half time as Brett Pitman's lob came back off the bar and an unmarked McGoldrick failed to tuck home the rebound.

Williams made a lively start to the second period and could have added to his goal tally in the 49th minute when a corner deflected off his body and bounced just wide for a goal kick.

Mick McCarthy's side drew level just before the hour mark following a swift counter, which Pitman capped off with a neat finish, moments after Doncaster had almost doubled their lead at the other end.

Ipswich had a handful of chances to win the match in normal time, coming closest in the 90th minute when Toure went on a mazy run and let fly, Stuckmann tipping the ball wide with his fingertips to force extra time.

The Tractor Boys bagged a goal in the 102nd minute when McGoldrick popped up at the back post to nod the ball beyond Stuckmann.

They guaranteed their place in round three moments later as James Alabi added a third, rifling home the rebound after a McGoldrick strike was parried by Stuckmann.

Just when the visiting supporters thought that the goal rush had come to an end, Ryan Fraser added a fourth in the 113th minute to dump more misfortune on hapless Doncaster.
