Doncaster Rovers claim Watford scalp to advance

Goals from Nathan Tyson and Liam Wakefield hand Doncaster Rovers a win over Watford in the Capital One Cup to advance to the third round of the competition.

Doncaster Rovers have knocked Championship side Watford out of the Capital One Cup courtesy of a 2-1 win at Vicarage Road.

The visitors looked threatening in the opening minutes and Nathan Tyson almost gave them the lead as he raced down the left, but he powered his shot just past the post.

Tyson came close again as he latched on to a cross from the right into the area, but he couldn't guide his header on target from six yards out.

However, the striker did hand his side the lead from the spot as he fired a penalty past Jonathan Bond after Gabriel Tamas had fouled in the area.

Watford responded and were within inches of an equaliser as Lewis McGugan's long-range effort crashed off the bar, while Sean Murray saw his rebound effort blocked.

The home side get their leveller when Odion Ighalo found Lloyd Dyer in space inside the box and the midfielder made no mistake as he slotted the ball into the net.

In the second half, Doncaster began to get a grip on the game and retook the lead following a flowing move as Liam Wakefield converted Dean Furman's cross.

Watford pressed late on for an equaliser but couldn't find a way through the Rovers backline as the visitors advanced to the next round of the competition.
