Derby County striker Chris Martin frustrated by two-week absence

Derby County lose their top scorer Chris Martin to a hamstring injury that will see him miss around two weeks of action.

Derby County top scorer Chris Martin has revealed that he will be out for around two weeks after suffering his first injury in almost two years at the club.

The striker picked up a hamstring problem in the early stages of last week's 2-2 draw at fellow promotion hopefuls Bournemouth.

"The scan was positive really compared to what I thought it might be, so hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be back in action with the help of the medical team," Martin, who has 16 league goals to his name this season, told the club website.

"It was quite innocuous really, I stretched to get on the end of a cross towards the near post, extended my knee a little too much and it put pressure on my hamstring.

"It was quite early on; I tried to play on and given I haven't had too many muscle injuries I just tried to run it off and it wasn't happening."

With Martin out, on-loan striker Darren Bent is likely to become Derby's number one option in attack. Since joining from Aston Villa, the forward has netted five goals in six appearances.

He is yet to start a game in the league, but will probably be named in Steve McClaren's starting lineup when Derby travel to Rotherham United tomorrow night.

The Rams could go two points clear at the top if they win and Middlesbrough lost at Birmingham City.
