Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has revealed that he is close to signing a new defender on loan.

The Railwaymen are currently sitting at the bottom of the League One table after conceding 21 goals in their opening eight fixtures of the season.

While refusing to name any particular players, Davis hopes to add experience to his squad in the near future.

"I'm looking to bring in another defender," he told the club's official site. "There has been dialogue with the club and he is a player with experience who I feel would help us.

"He is a leader and a voice and has been there and done it. I just think he would help us on the pitch and off it."

Crewe continue their League One campaign on Saturday when they host Colchester United.
