Coventry City edge past Walsall

Nathan Delfouneso scores six minutes from time to help Coventry City get the better of Walsall 2-1 at home in League One.

Coventry City have registered a 2-1 victory over Walsall at Sixfields in League One.

Michael Petrasso had the first real chance for the hosts after 15 minutes when he fired from outside the box, but his attempt went wide.

Minutes later Febian Brandy forced Coventry goalkeeper Joe Murphy into a save with a shot from distance.

However, midway through the first half Steven Pressley's side went ahead through Callum Wilson, who latched on to Chuba Akpom's pass and found the target from close range.

Brandy tried his luck to equalise from inside the Coventry box, but his attempt went high and wide.

The home side could have added to their tally had Mark Marshall and Petrasso been able to get past Richard O'Donnell in the Walsall goal in the final 15 minutes of the first half.

Chances came thick and fast for the visitors at the start of the second half, and Malvind Benning eventually converted one of them on 54 minutes, shooting home with his right foot from inside the box.

Milan Lalkovic had a header saved on the hour mark, Nicky Featherstone fired over the bar and Romaine Sawyers tested Murphy, as Walsall began to increase the pressure.

Coventry were unlucky not to have regained the advantage on 77 minutes when Blair Adams's long-range effort came back off the crossbar.

However, the hosts did eventually pick up the three points with the winner six minutes from time, Nathan Delfouneso shooting home from close range after collecting Petrasso's pass.

The result leaves Walsall outside the playoff spots in eighth, while Coventry are now 12th.
