Former Germany international Arne Friedrich announces his retirement from professional football.

Former Germany international Arne Friedrich has announced his retirement from professional football following a 14-year career.

The 34-year-old, who has been dogged by a host of hip injuries in recent seasons, joined MLS outfit Chicago Fire from Wolfsburg in 2012.

The centre-back's contract had been due to run until November, but injury has forced the experienced defender to hang up his boots.

It is not yet clear whether the German will remain with Chicago in a coaching capacity.
