Chelsea are interested in signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to a report.

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, after agreeing to sell David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 21-year-old was a regular under Jose Mourinho during his time in Madrid, but he has made just 14 appearances in the league this season.

According to The Guardian, Chelsea are keen to strengthen their backline after allowing Luiz to leave for what is thought to be a record transfer fee for a defender.

The report goes on to say that Diego Costa is expected to sign from Atletico Madrid for £31.8m, while the Blues are also interested in signing Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic.

Varane has been at Madrid for the past three seasons, after joining the club from Lens in June 2011.
