John Obi Mikel appeals for the safe return of his abducted father.

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has gone public in his appeal for the release of his abducted father in Nigeria.

Michael Obi has not been seen or heard from since failing to return home from work on Friday in the city of Jos.

Mikel was made aware of the situation by Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas on Saturday morning but still decided to play in the club's 0-0 draw at Stoke City on Sunday afternoon.

"I've always tried to help the country. This is the time for the country to help me, whoever knows where my dad is should please contact me," said Mikel.

"I said I would like to play [against Stoke], I wouldn't want to let the club down and if I didn't play the game I think my mum would be very sad. She told me to go out there and be strong and make sure I do well in the game.

"This happens a lot in the eastern part of Nigeria but my dad would probably be the first this has happened to in the northern part, which is a very safe place. This is very rare and surprising for everyone."

Mikel, 24, also confirmed that he may return to Nigeria this week.
