Jamie Carragher: Fernando Torres Chelsea move was "treacherous"

Jamie Carragher has described Fernando Torres's move to Chelsea from Liverpool back in 2011 as "treacherous".

The Spain international became the most expensive player in British football history when he made the £50m switch from Anfield to Stamford Bridge in January 2011.

The move was greeted with fury from Reds supporters, and Carragher admits that some players in the squad were shocked by the transfer.

He told the Daily Mail: "We knew at Liverpool for some time [Torres] wasn't happy and wanted to leave but, even still, when his £50m transfer to Chelsea went through, there was an element of disbelief.

"The fee we received for him pleased us but the identity of the buyers certainly did not. Had it been Arsenal or Manchester City, we could have dealt with it. But Chelsea? We'd gone head to head with them for years, the rivalry was huge.

"Liverpool fans adored him, too, so it felt like he was being treacherous. No matter how many times you saw him in blue, it never seemed right."

Torres moved to Atletico Madrid on loan after signing for AC Milan on a free transfer at the beginning of the month.
