Charlton Athletic beat Brentford to end winless run

Charlton Athletic defeat Brentford 3-0 in their Championship clash at The Valley to end a run of 14 matches without a victory in all competitions.

Charlton Athletic secured their first win in 14 matches as they defeated Brentford 3-0 at The Valley in the Championship.

The Addicks were the first team to threaten when Johann Berg Gudmundsson lined up a strike from 25 yards which David Button failed to hold, but the visitors managed to clear the danger from the rebound.

The home side came within inches of taking the lead when Tony Watt collected the ball inside the penalty area and fired a strike towards goal, which looked destined for the corner only for Button to produce a diving save.

Charlton took the lead in the 27th minute as Gudmundsson coasted into the penalty area and latched onto a cross from the left to steer the ball into the top corner with a left-footed volley past a stranded Button.

Guy Luzon's side doubled their lead just after the break when Watt found Igor Vetokele in the penalty area and the forward showed his composure by shaking off his marker and slotting the ball past Button.

Watt had the opportunity to seal Charlton's win when he raced through on goal, but he was denied by a good save from Button, who was keeping his side in the game.

The Bees made a late push to try to get something out of the match, but the home side sealed their victory when Frederic Bulot found the net in the 90th minute.
