Pinilla converted the spot kick on 39 minutes after Marco Sau was brought down in the box by Facundo Roncaglia.

Fiorentina struggled during the first half in which they failed to register a single shot on goal, but came out with renewed purpose after the break, with Alessandro Matri and Josip Ilicic going close for the visitors.

However, Cagliari held firm to secure all three points.
