Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson expected Gary Rowett to leave

Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson says that Gary Rowett was "always" going to leave the club following his appointment at Birmingham City.

Burton Albion chairman Ben Robinson has revealed that Gary Rowett was "always" going to leave the club when the right job came along.

The 40-year-old was appointed the new manager of Birmingham City on Monday following Lee Clark's dismissal.

"He has been a great manager," Robinson told BBC Radio Derby. "He is an ambitious young manager and there is nothing wrong with that. He would always go when the right opportunity came along."

Rowett spent just over two-and-a-half years with the League Two side.
