Bristol City into third round of Johnstone's Paint Trophy

Bristol City ease into the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 3-1 win over Cheltenham Town.

Bristol City are through to the third round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy courtesy of a 3-1 win over Cheltenham Town this evening.

Wes Burns opened the scoring for the visitors shortly before the half-hour mark when he met Jay Emmanuel-Thomas's cross with a powerful header.

Jack Deaman almost put through his own net on the stroke of half time to double the lead for Bristol, but his header bounced just wide of the goal after another good delivery from Emmanuel-Thomas.

Steve Cotterill's side extended their advantage after the restart through Korey Smith when he found the bottom corner after more good work from former Arsenal youngster Emmanuel-Thomas.

Cheltenham were back in it on 64 minutes when Terry Gornell left goalkeeper Frank Fielding rooted with an excellent header.

However their hopes of a comeback were extinguished with six minutes of normal time remaining when Smith scored his second of the evening with a powerful effort from the edge of the box.
