Brighton & Hove Albion hold high-flying Burnley to stalemate

High-flying Burnley miss the chance to move back into the top four as they are held to a 0-0 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Burnley have missed the chance to move back into the top four of the Premier League table, having been held to a goalless draw by Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium this afternoon.

The hosts actually came closest to breaking the deadlock when they were awarded a penalty with 10 minutes remaining of the first half, but Glenn Murray blazed his spot kick over the bar to squander the best chance of the match.

The point is still enough to take Burnley up to fifth in the table temporarily at least, while Brighton stay 13th having avoided a fourth straight Premier League defeat.

The Seagulls were the first to come close after only 15 minutes when Murray rose highest inside the box to steer a header towards goal, but Nick Pope was there to make the save for Burnley.

Brighton have now scored just one goal from their last six matches - and that came from the penalty spot - so it was no surprise that they struggled to find a way past a Burnley side who have kept nine clean sheets this season.

It was not through a lack of trying, though, and Chris Hughton's side did look the more likely to score in the first half, with Pope also called into action to deny Anthony Knockaert and Lewis Dunk before the half-hour mark.

Brighton's biggest chance to end their goal drought came in the 36th minute, though, as James Tarkowski was penalised for bundling into Murray inside the box, handing the striker a chance to convert his own spot kick.

However, Murray fired his penalty over the crossbar when trying to blast it down the middle, ensuring that the two sides went into half time all square.

Brighton continued to ask questions of the Burnley defence at the start of the second half too, with Knockaert dancing past a couple of defenders to create space to shoot only to then be denied by another stop from Pope.

Burnley's first clear opening did not arrive until shortly after the hour mark when Scott Arfield was twice denied in quick succession before Chris Wood converted the second rebound, only to be flagged offside.

Wood had another sight of goal with just over 15 minutes remaining when he was sent clean through on goal by Ashley Barnes, but Mat Ryan stayed big to deny his attempted chipped finish and keep the scores goalless.

That was how it stayed until the end of the match too as Burnley were denied a third consecutive win, although it is enough to lift the Clarets up to fifth above Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Brighton, meanwhile, are now just three points clear of the relegation zone having failed to win any of their seven Premier League matches.

Brighton (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Bruno, Duffy, Dunk, Bong; Propper, Stephens, Knockaert (Izquierdo, 83'), Gross (Brown, 75'), March; Murray (Hemed, 63')

Burnley (4-4-1-1): Pope; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson, Cork, Defou (Barnes, 68')r, Arfield; Hendrick; Wood (Vokes, 81')
