Bayern Munich extend lead at top of Bundesliga in style

Bayern Munich beat Schalke 04 comfortably to extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to 20 points.

Bayern Munich have gone 20 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with a 5-1 victory over Schalke 04 at the Allianz Arena.

The hosts got off to a flying start thanks to David Alaba's third-minute free kick, which found its way past Ralf Fahrmann with the aid of a deflection off Roman Neustadter.

The second goal followed shortly through Arjen Robben, who netted his first of the evening by darting into the box and converting a Mario Mandzukic cross.

Mandzukic added the third goal after 24 minutes by heading home Alaba's cross to all but end the contest with under half-an-hour played.

It got even worse for Schalke just minutes later as Robben again found the net, this time picking his spot perfectly to beat Fahrmann following an error from Joel Matip.

The Royal Blues looked more fired up in the second half and forced Manuel Neur into a few saves, before eventually pulling a goal back, with Rafinha turning into his own net following a corner.

However, Bayern soon restored their four-goal cushion, with Robben completing the scoring with his hat-trick, converting from the penalty spot after Kyriakos Papadopoulos was shown a red for bringing down Mandzukic in the box.
