Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has praised his side for their "excellent" performance during Saturday's win over Stoke City in the Premier League.

The Villans began the new campaign with a 1-0 victory on Saturday, courtesy of Andreas Weimann's goal on 50 minutes.

While admitting that his players started the game nervously, Lambert believes that they recovered well to come away with the points.

"I thought we were excellent apart from the first 10 minutes where we were a bit nervous," the Scot told BBC Sport. "It was a solid performance. We never got bullied and stood up to it.

"I thought there were massive performances. It was an outstanding team display. Everyone played their part."

Villa play their first home game of the season next Saturday when they entertain Newcastle United.
