Arsene Wenger will only sign "special" players

Arsene Wenger says that only "special" players will be added to his Arsenal squad before the end of the transfer window.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that only players that he rates as "special" will be signed before the end of the transfer window.

Despite being linked with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Luiz Gustavo at various times this summer, Wenger has only added French youngster Yaya Sanogo to his squad on a free transfer.

When asked if he has any intention of making some signings before next week's deadline, Wenger admitted that while his squad is in need of bolstering, he will only sign someone that would improve his options.

"We do not have a fixed number [of players needed], I just think we are a bit short at the moment," he told reporters. "I believe the most important thing is to focus on the quality of the squad I have and to play the football we want to play.

"I'm guided by my conscience to do as well as I can for this club and by the vision of the game I want to play. I feel with the players I have, we can play the football we want to play. I'm a great admirer of the spirit and the attitude of these players. They are special.

"If I want to add something, it has to be special. I still am optimistic and I hope I will not disappoint you."

Arsenal recently had an offer for Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye rejected.
