Jack Wilshere salutes "fantastic" Danny Welbeck

Jack Wilshere salutes Arsenal teammate Danny Welbeck for his "fantastic" debut against Manchester City.

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has praised teammate Danny Welbeck for his "fantastic" debut in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

Welbeck donned a Gunners shirt for the first time since his £16m move from Manchester United and produced an industrious performance at the Emirates Stadium.

The England forward might have marked the occasion with a goal after missing a one-on-one with Joe Hart, but Wilshere says that the 23-year-old can be proud of his Arsenal bow nonetheless.

"He was fantastic. Unfortunately in the first half his little chip didn't go in but he was fantastic, and he showed great work rate," he told the club's official website.

"He was closing the centre backs down, he was chasing back and he was quality on the ball as well so I am sure there is more to come from him."

Second-half goals from Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez put Arsene Wenger's side in the driving seat after Sergio Aguero's first-half opener.

However, Martin Demichelis headed home an 83rd-minute equaliser to salvage a point for the champions.
