Sunday's opening La Liga clash pitted relegation-threatened Almeria against Getafe in Andalusia.

The away side had the better of the chances in the first period, but neither side could make the breakthrough.

Almeria won it in the early stages of the second half, however, when Jonathan Zongo headed into the top corner.

Read how it all unfolded in Sports Mole's minute-by-minute live commentary of the action below.

Morning all! Sunday’s La Liga coverage opens from Andalusia as Almeria welcome Getafe. The home side enter the match off the back of a 2-0 defeat to Villarreal last weekend, with that result leaving them in 18th position in the table. Getafe, meanwhile, picked up a point against Real Sociedad last weekend. As a result, they sit in 12th position on 24 points.

In terms of the recent meetings between the two sides, Getafe have won three of the last five matches, with Almeria also winning once and the further two games ending in draws. As mentioned, the last time the two sides met in this stadium was in December 2010, when Getafe picked up all three points with a 3-2 win.

TEAMS:

ALMERIA: Esteban; Dubarbier, Torsiglieri, Rafita, Trujillo; Soriano, Tebar, Azeez, Vidal; Suso, Zongo

GETAFE: Moya; Arroyo, Rafa, Lopez, Escudero; Leon, Michel, Mosquera, Sarabia; Castro, Marica

So there we have it. No Helder Barbosa or Corona in the Almeria XI, but Jonathan Zongo and Suso both start. There are also spots for Marcos Tebar and Aleix Vidal. Getafe, meanwhile, prefer Ciprian Marica to Adrian Colunga in attack, while Lacen and Escudero both drop to the bench.

As it stands, Almeria sit in 18th position in the table on 19 points. The newly-promoted outfit have won just five of their 20 matches, drawing four and losing 11 times. Real Valladolid’s win over Villarreal on Saturday dropped them into the bottom three, while just two teams – the bottom two, Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis – have a worse goal difference.

Three of Almeria’s five league wins this season have come on their travels. At home, they have won two of their nine matches, losing four times in the process. They have recovered following a terrible start to the season, but their performances have dropped in recent weeks. There is no question that they are one of a number of teams fighting the drop this season.

Goals have not been too much of a problem for Almeria in relation to the teams around them with 21 strikes in their 20 matches. Getafe, meanwhile, have managed just 22 goals. Down the other end, however, Almeria have struggled with 40 goals conceded, which is the third-worst record in the league. Getafe have not fared much better with 33 conceded.

Getafe ended a run of four straight defeats in all competitions with a 2-2 draw against Real Sociedad in the league last time out. As it stands, they sit in 12th position in the table on 24 points. They might be six places above their opponents this afternoon, but just five points separate the two sides. That is an indication of the closeness in the bottom half of the table.

Getafe’s home form this season has been patchy with four wins, three draws and four defeats, while they have lost six times on their travels. Victory this afternoon could move them into eighth position, but a couple of bad results could see them drop into trouble. Aside from the top seven teams, everyone is looking over their shoulder.

PREDICTION: Neither of these sides enter the match in the best form, but I have a feeling that we could have a match full of goals. I am finding it difficult to separate the pair and will therefore back a score draw in Andalusia.

Here we go then. Both sets of players join us on the pitch for the first period. The pre-match handshakes have been undertaken and the flags have been exchanged. Let's hope for an entertaining La Liga contest. The away side get the action underway as morning becomes afternoon in Spain.

Not a full house inside the stadium this afternoon - far from it in fact - but there is a strong atmosphere. You just get the feeling that the first goal could be decisive in this type of match. Bright start from Getafe as Rafa finds some space down the left before delivering a cross towards Sarabia, but there are no takers.

Good pressure from the home side in the last couple of moments with Suso and Vidal both involved in the final third, but neither can test Moya. Just a reminder that Almeria have dropped into the bottom three following Real Valladolid's surprise 1-0 win over Villarreal on Saturday evening.

Not too much to report in terms of opportunities in the opening six minutes, but the signs are strong with both sides forcing the issue. Plenty of crosses have arrived in each box, but neither goalkeeper has been tested thus far. It must be said that the pitch is in wonderful condition for this stage of the season.

Half-chance for the home side as Vidal collects a cross from Zongo before attempting to find the top corner, but his effort just whistles wide of the post. Marcia breaks down the other end moments later, but the Romanian is ruled offside at the final moment.

Another half-chance for Almeria as Soriano meets a cross from Zongo, but his header is straight into the arms of Moya. The end-to-end period of the match continues as Getafe break down the other end, but Marica's through pass is cleared by Rafita.

Almeria continue to force the issue as Tebar meets a loose ball on the edge of the box, but his effort is high and wide of the crossbar. Getafe have a free kick down the other end as Suso fells Marica, but the resulting set piece is headed over the crossbar by Arroyo.

The pressure continues from Almeria as they force two corners in quick succession, but Rafa and Lopez take it in turns to clear the danger. Plenty happening in the middle of the park as the intensity remains high, but neither team has threatened to open the scoring with 15 minutes on the clock.

Well, we are 18 minutes into this La Liga contest and in truth, not too much has happened. The intensity has been harmed in the last few moments by a series of offside calls, while the referee has been forced to intervene following a number of late challenges.

Good pressure from Getafe in the last couple of moments as Marica tries one from outside the box, but it is deflected behind for a corner. The resulting set piece is delivered into the area by Leon, but Rafita it on hand to clear.

GOAL DISALLOWED! Getafe think they have taken the lead as Michel converts from close range, but the offside flag is raised. Replays have shown that the goal should have stood.

Almeria remain a threat on the counter with the movement and pace of Suso, but the home side are yet to really worry Moya in the Getafe goal. The away side are in control of the possession, with Marica and Sarabia both involved in forward positions. It remains goalless with 23 minutes on the clock.

Half-chance for Marica as the Getafe forward finds some space outside the box before attempting to find the top corner, but his effort was always moving high and wide of the crossbar. Almeria enjoy a period of possession moments later, but once more their attack breaks down in the final third.

This match has not been short of effort, but it has been short of quality with both sides struggling to find that elusive pass in the final third. The away team continue to look the more progressive in the final third, but they are still struggling to fashion a clear shooting opportunity. Marica delivers another low cross into the box, but Trujillo is across to clear at the vital moment.

Neither side is too interested in defending at the moment with opportunities at either end. Marica has an effort blocked for Getafe, before Suso stings the palms of Moya down the other end. Little over 15 minutes of the first period remaining. Still we wait for the first real chance, but it is not through the want of trying.

It's good work between Soriano and Vidal as the pair combine down the left before the latter picks out Suso, but his cross is straight into the arms of Moya. Getafe are down the other end with Castro moments later, but his deep cross is cleared by Rafita. Plenty of effort, but not much quality in the final third.

The referee has been more involved than he would have liked in the last couple of moments due to a number of late challenges from both sides. Getafe continue to look the more dangerous in the final third, but they are finding it difficult to test Esteban. Little over 10 minutes of the first period remaining in this La Liga contest.

Almeria are coming under increasing pressure with Rafita and Soriano both producing last-ditch challenges in the last minute or two. Getafe force two corners in quick succession, but the first is saved by Esteban before Azeez heads clear.

CHANCE! Wonderful chance for the away side to take the lead as Castro finds himself with time and space inside the Almeria box, but his effort is straight into the arms of Esteban. The capital outfit are in control of proceedings in the latter stages of the first period.

Half-chance for the home side as Suso collects a pass from Tebar before curling one towards the top corner, but his effort is high of the crossbar. The opportunities are starting to arrive following a fairly lacklustre opening to this match. Little under five minutes of the first period remaining.

Good pressure from the home side in the latter stages of the first period as they force two corners in quick succession. The first is headed behind by Arroyo, before Soriano places an effort just wide of the post. It appears that the two teams will enter he interval on terms.

CROSSBAR! Getafe come close to breaking the deadlock in the latter stages of the first period as Rafa meets a corner from Leon, but his header thumps off the crossbar. Almeria survive once more. They really need the half-time whistle.

HALF TIME: Almeria 0-0 Getafe

So there we have it. The referee brings the first period to an end with the two sides level at 0-0. Not too much happened in the opening 30 minutes, but Getafe had opportunities to open the scoring in the latter stages of the first period. It is delicately poised with 45 minutes of football still to play.

STATISTICS: The away side have just about shaded the possession with 51%, while they have had seven attempts to Almeria's five, but both sides have had two attempts on target. There has been just the one yellow card, meanwhile, with Sarabia booked for Getafe after 38 minutes.

BENCH WATCH: The home side have a number of attacking options on their bench in the shape of Oscar Diaz, Helder Barbosa and Corona. Meanwhile, Getafe have the likes of Lafita, Adrian Colunga and Roberto Lago in reserve. There are certainly goals in that list of players.

Here we go then. Both sets of players join us on the pitch for the second period. You just get the feeling that the first goal - if there indeed is one - could be enough to claim all the points. Right, the home side get the second 45 minutes underway in Andalusia.

No changes for either side at the interval, which is not much of a surprise. However, I suspect both managers will consider altering proceedings if the score remains level for the next 20 minutes or so. Bright start to the second half from Getafe, who certainly ended the first period on the front foot.

Not too much to report in terms of chances in the early stages of the second half, but Almeria have started to see more of the ball. Azeez attempts to find Zongo with a through pass moments later, but Rafa is across to clear the danger. The first goal - if there indeed is one - could be decisive this afternoon.

GOAL! Almeria 1-0 Getafe (Zongo)

The home side lead after 49 minutes as Zongo rises inside the box before directing a powerful header into the top corner. Brilliant leap from the forward. First blood to Almeria in the second half.

Victory for Almeria this afternoon would move them into 15th spot in the table and just two points behind Getafe, who are on a really poor run of form. Leon almost leads an immediate response for the away side, but Marica cannot meet a whipped cross from the former Real Madrid midfielder.

Not too much to report in terms of clear chances in the last few moments with both sides struggling to find that elusive pass in the final third. Getafe continue to look the more progressive in the final third, but the only statistic that matters sees Almeria lead with 55 minutes on the clock.

Opportunity for Getafe to threaten from a free kick as Diego Castro is felled on the edge of the area by Rafita. The resulting set piece is taken by Leon, but his low effort is pushed wide by Esteban. Little over 30 minutes of this La Liga contest remaining.

Another half-chance for the away side as Leon finds some space outside the box before attempting to curl one into the top corner, but his effort is wide of the post. We are getting to the stage in the match where both managers will be considering changes. Both have a number of attacking options in reserve.

CHANCE! Wonderful chance for Zongo to score his second as Rafita drives down the left before delivering towards the Almeria forward, but Moya is on hand to collect at the vital moment. The intensity has certainly risen in the last few minutes.

Another free kick for Getafe as Marica is felled on the edge of the box by Rafita. Moments later, Getafe make a change as Lago replaces Escudero. The resulting set piece is taken by Leon, but his effort is straight into the arms of Esteban. Little over 25 minutes of this La Liga contest remaining.

Half-chance for the home side as Soriano strikes one from distance, but it moves wide of the post. Moments later, Vidal leads a three-on-two counter, but his final pass is short and Lopez clears the danger. There has been some questionable defending from the away side that is for certain.

Getafe make their second change of the match as attacker Lafita enters the field in place of Mosquera, who has struggled to influence proceedings this evening. You just get the feeling that we have not seen the last of the goals this afternoon as Lafita heads just wide of the Almeria post from close range.

Not too much to report in terms of chances in the last couple of moments, but both sides remain threats in the final third. As it stands, Almeria would move into 15th. The home side make their first change moments later as Soriano is replaced by Oscar Diaz.

Getafe also look to their bench as Lacen replaces Michel for the final 15 minutes or so. Leon takes matters into his own hands moments later with an effort from distance, but it just moves wide of the post. Can Getafe force an equaliser in the latter stages?

It's brilliant work from Lago as the Getafe defender drives past three defenders before advancing into the Almeria box, but his effort is blocked by Dubarbier. End-to-end football as Vidal breaks down the other end, but Lisandro is across to quell the danger.

The referee has been more involved than he would have liked in the last couple of moments with a series of late challenges arriving. Lacen is the latest name to enter the book as the Getafe midfielder fells Suso, but the resulting free kick is played short and comes to nothing.

Almeria look to their bench once more as on-loan Liverpool attacker Suso is replaced by Helder Barbosa, who has been in and out of the team in recent weeks. Right, little over 10 minutes remaining. You just get the feeling that there is another goal in this contest.

Not too much to report in terms of clear chances in the last couple of moments, but Getafe are the team on the front foot. They continue to deliver deep crosses into the Almeria box, but the home side remain compact in defensive areas. Little under 10 minutes of this La Liga contest remaining.

Getafe continue to force the issue with two corners in quick succession, but Tebar and Rafita take it in turns to clear the danger. Getafe are in no real rush, however, which is a surprise with little over five minutes remaining. Barbosa's pace continues to provide an outlet for Almeria in the final third.

Almeria do not look comfortable defending corners as another deep cross from Leon causes problems inside the box, but the danger is cleared following a period of pin-ball. Almeria just cannot get out of their own half at the moment as the pressure continues.

Handbags between Zongo and Leon as the pair clash following a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge, but the referee is on hand to calm proceedings. Moments later, Pedro delivers a deep cross towards Lafita, but the attacker cannot make proper contract at the vital moment.

CHANCE! Wonderful chance for the home side to score their second on the counter as Zongo puts it on a plate for Vidal inside the box, but Moya makes a fine save at the vital moment. Almeria make their final change moments later when Zongo is replaced by Corona. We are into three minutes of stoppage time in this La Liga clash.

FULL TIME: Almeria 1-0 Getafe

So there we have it. Almeria collect all three points with a 1-0 win over Getafe. Thanks for joining Sports Mole for the action and be sure to join us from 3.30pm for more La Liga football. Until then!
