Tom Daley has admitted that an error in the fourth round of the men's synchronised 10m platform cost him and Peter Waterfield a medal.

The Team GB duo lead Chinese favourites Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan at the halfway stage, but only earned 71.28 points for a botched reverse three-and-half somersault in round four.

"Miss one dive and you're gone. It's the way the sport goes. Sometimes it goes in your favour, sometimes it goes against you," Sky Sports News quotes Daley as saying.

Yuan and Yanquan took the gold medal with a final score of 486.78, with Sanchez and Garcia Navarro of Mexico earning a surprise silver thanks to a combined haul of 468.90.

Nicholas McCrory and David Boudia earned bronze for their score of 463.47, edging out Daley and Waterfield, who finished with 454.65.
