GB diver Matthew Dixon "really pleased" with fourth place

Team GB diver Matthew Dixon tells Sports Mole that he is surprised to have finished fourth in the men's 3m event at the European Games.

Team GB diver Matthew Dixon has admitted that he is surprised to have finished fourth in the men's 3m springboard at the European Games in Baku.

The 15-year-old put in some strong dives to finish ahead of his older rivals in the event, which was won by teammate Matty Lee.

"I'm really pleased with my performance," Dixon told Sports Mole afterwards. "I wasn't expecting fourth because the preliminary didn't go as expected. I could have done a better inward 3-1/2 [tonight] and if I'd have done better at that I might have got on the podium, I'm not sure."

Of Lee's success, he added: "I'm really pleased for Matty. Obviously Matty hasn't done a junior event in a while because he's been off doing senior events but he's come back and he's just nailed every dive. He's got a gold so that's great!"

The silver medal went to Russia's Nikita Shleikher, while France's Alexis Jandard claimed bronze.
