Tom Daley finishes fifth in the men's 10m in Russia in a fiercely-contested event.

Tom Daley has finished fifth at the World Diving Series in Kazan, Russia in a fiercely-contested men's 10m platform event.

The 20-year-old was immediately off the pace when he scored a disappointing 68.25 for his opening routine, the armstand back triple somersault.

With his fellow competitors mostly registering dives around the 90-mark, Daley was firmly in fifth on the leaderboard until his penultimate dive, when he scored a stunning 106.20 for his back 3-1/2 to propel him to third. He was unable to capitalise on the advantage with his final jump, however, scoring just 81.60 for his reverse 3-1/2 to wind up fifth overall and almost 30 points off the pace.

China's Qiu Bo claimed his second successive gold of the series, with three 90-plus dives and two 100-plus dives for an impressive total of 573.05.

Mexico's German Sanchez, who finished fifth overall in the day's earlier qualifiers, was the dark horse of the finals with a total score of 554.15. The 22-year-old registered four 90-plus dives on his way to earning silver, his first individual medal of the season.

Qiu's compatriot Yang Jian took the final spot on the podium with a total of 551.95, including a session-topping 112.75 for his trademark forward 4-1/2 pike in the last jump of the competition.
