Double Commonwealth Games medallist Jack Laugher has said that he still believed he could win gold after a poor penultimate dive in the final of the 3m springboard tonight.
Unfortunately for England, the 19-year-old wasn't able to produce the goods and had to settle for silver in an event for which he is ranked second best in the world.
After winning gold on the opening night in the 1m springboard final, Laugher insisted that more was to come in the 3m discipline, but he wasn't able to make it double gold at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh as costly mistakes saw him lose out to Malaysia's Ooi Tze Liang.
Laugher started tonight's final in strong fashion with a score of 88.4 in the first round, but effectively lost the gold medal when he failed to successfully land his hardest dive - a forward four-and-a-half somersault - in the fifth round and scored 47.5 points.
He admitted soon after his final that he was "hurt" by silver and also said that he still believed gold was possible after the poor fifth dive.
Talking about his last back three-and-a-half somersault, Laugher told reporters: "That dive for me is normally a dive I can go over 90 on.
"In the World Cup it was a little bit off and when I've been here it was a little bit off as well, but in the World Series it's been great so I thought there was potential I could pull it off. It's just been one of those days and it didn't go my way unfortunately."
Laugher will look to win his third medal of the Games tomorrow lunchtime when he and partner Chris Mears contest the synchronised 3m springboard event.
