Victorious diver Rebecca Gallantree has told Sports Mole that she and teammate Alicia Blagg didn't really believe that they could beat Canada and win the synchronised 3m springboard gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Gallantree, 29, and Blagg, 17, caused the largest roar of first day's diving when they won gold with the last dive of the night at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.
The duo registered a score of 72.54 on their hardest dive - a forward three-and-a-half somersault - to snatch gold away from the defending champions.
When asked if they thought they could beat Canada's Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware, Gallantree told SM: "We have beaten them before, so we knew we could do it, but I think after the [poor] preparation that we had we probably didn't really.
"Since we beat them last year they've been getting stronger and stronger."
Blagg described the moment that she saw the scoreboard indicate first place as the best in her life, but also revealed before the competition that they would have been content without a medal.
"In our minds we were thinking that it was a really strong field," she added. "We would have been buzzing with third, but if we don't get a medal, we don't get a medal."
The duo also competed in the 3m synchro at the last Commonwealth Games, improving this year to win after finishing fourth in Delhi.
