Phil Taylor powers past Wes Newton in Leeds

Phil Taylor moves a step closer to avoiding relegation from the Premier League with a comprehensive 7-1 triumph over Wes Newton in Leeds.

Phil Taylor has moved up to sixth place in the Premier League table after he recorded a 7-1 win over Wes Newton in Leeds.

The 16-time world champion averaged 107 as he hit four maximums to brush aside his opponent and move two points away from the top four.

Reigning world champion Michael van Gerwen hit an 11-dart leg to edge to a 7-5 victory over Gary Anderson, which saw him replace Peter Wright at the top of the standings.

Wright was required to hit a 161 checkout in the final leg of his encounter with Raymond van Barneveld to win a point, which maintained his unbeaten streak on his tournament debut.

Adrian Lewis secured a 6-6 draw with Robert Thornton after the Scot missed two darts at double 20 for the win, while Simon Whitlock came back from a 3-0 deficit to earn a share of the spoils against Dave Chisnall.
