Devon Petersen records surprise win over Steve Beaton

South Africa's Devon Petersen records a surprise 3-1 success over former world champion Steve Beaton in the first round of the PDC World Championship.

South Africa's Devon Petersen has recorded a surprise 3-1 win over Steve Beaton in the first round of the PDC World Championship.

Petersen had earlier beaten Mohammed Latif Sapup in a preliminary tie to set up the encounter with the 1996 Lakeside winner, but a shock victory looked unlikely when he lost the opening set.

However, the 27-year-old capitalised on Beaton missing four darts to take the second set, and a 106 checkout in the next helped move him a set away from the second round.

Beaton looked ready to take the match into a decider before Petersen took out 50 to move through to a clash with either Justin Pipe or Arron Monk.
