UK Open day one roundup: Phil Taylor beaten by Aden Kirk

Defending champion Phil Taylor is knocked out of the UK Open - the tournament nicknamed 'the FA Cup of darts' - by a 22-year-old factory worker from Nottingham.

Defending champion Phil Taylor was knocked out of the UK Open on Friday night by a 22-year-old factory worker from Nottingham.

'The Power' entered the tournament in round three, where he was beaten 9-7 by Aden Kirk.

There was no such trouble for world number one Michael van Gerwen, who booked his place in the fourth round by thrashing James Hubbard 9-1.

Fellow World Championship finalist Peter Wright also made it through, after snatching a dramatic 9-8 win over Michael Smith, who missed eight match darts in the 17th leg.

Elsewhere in round three, Adrian Lewis, Kim Huybrechts and James Wade recorded comfortable victories over Ronnie Baxter, Ross Smith and Michael Mansell respectively.

Simon Whitlock's poor form continued as he lost 9-6 to Ronny Huybrechts.

Dave Chisnall overcame Justin Pipe 9-7, while Gary Anderson stormed past Andy Smith 9-3.

Two-time winner Raymond van Barneveld had a busy but successful day. Unlike the majority of his main rivals, the affable Dutchman began the event in round one.

'Barney' opened up with a 5-3 triumph over Tony Broughton, before seeing off Martin Stead 5-2. He then cruised into round four with a 9-3 win against Mick Todd.
