Jess Varnish beaten in track sprint semi-finals

England's track cyclist Jess Varnish loses her sprint semi-final to Anna Meares of Australia and will instead compete for the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Team England's Jess Varnish was unable to qualify for the women's track sprint final in Glasgow, suffering a 2-0 best-of-three defeat to Australia's Anna Meares.

In the first of the two races, Varnish attempted to hold off the Australian, but lost by a wheel in what was a very evenly-matched contest.

Meares took the lead in the second race and was too strong for the English cyclist, with Varnish unable to get past her on the final straight.

In the other Commonwealth Games semi, Stephanie Morton beat Fatehah Mustapa to set up al all-Australian final which takes place on Sunday.
