Rain affects play - only two County Championship matches went ahead

Both divisions in the Specsavers County Championship were weather-affected with four games abandoned.

Rain washed out all play scheduled in Specsavers County Championship Division One.

The first day's action between Kent and leaders Somerset, and Surrey's clash with Yorkshire at Guildford were both abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Heavy rain also wiped out the second day of Nottinghamshire's match against Hampshire at Nettleworth.

In Division Two, Lancashire pair James Anderson and Graham Onions were in superb form with the ball as Worcestershire were bowled out for 98 on a rain-hit opening day at Blackfinch New Road.

Anderson took four for 24 and Onions four for 55 as the home side were skittled out in just 38.1 overs.

Ed Barnard, who was promoted up the order to number six, offered some resistance for the home side with a defiant 32 as Worcestershire were dismissed for the second lowest total in the Championship this summer.

Durham's Ben Raine and Brydon Carse produced an unbroken century stand for the eighth wicket against Northamptonshire on day one of their clash at Emirates Riverside.

Ben Sanderson had put the home side on the back foot with a brilliant spell of three for 18 with the new bowl, clean bowling the top three before Durham managed to recover to reach 209 for seven at the end of the day's play.

The lower-order fightback was led by Raine and Carse who scored 75 and 47 not out respectively.

Elsewhere in the second division, no play was possible on the first day of Leicestershire's match against Middlesex at Grace Road.
