Report: Steve Smith to replace Michael Clarke as captain

Steve Smith will replace Michael Clarke as Australia's captain for the rest of the series against India, according to reports.

Australia have reportedly decided to select Steve Smith as captain Michael Clarke's replacement for the rest of the Test series against India.

The hosts kicked off the series with a 48-run victory at the Adelaide Oval, but the celebrations were cut short when Clarke suggested that his career could be in doubt after tearing his hamstring.

According to reports in Australia, Smith will be named captain for the remainder of the winter, although the 25-year-old could stay in the role for the foreseeable future should Clarke continue to struggle with injuries.

Clarke has been forced to battle with hamstring problems in both legs in recent months, while the 33-year-old was also forced off the field in Adelaide when a chronic back condition restricted his movement at the crease.

Brad Haddin was tipped to replace Clarke as captain for the final three matches against India, but it is believed that Cricket Australia have moved towards Smith as doubts remain over when the 37-year-old wicketkeeper will announce his retirement.
