Shikar Dhawan hits ton to lift India to 307-7 against South Africa

Skikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane help India to set South Africa a target of 308 in their Cricket World Cup Pool B meeting in Melbourne.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan hit 137 off 146 balls to help India on their way to 307-7 against South Africa in this morning's Cricket World Cup meeting.

Both sides started their Pool B campaigns with victories last week, meaning that the winners of this encounter will take a real foothold at the top of the standings.

Having won the toss, India elected to bat first and it did not take long before Rohit Sharma was run out by AB de Villiers as India got off to a somewhat shaky start.

Virat Kohli managed to clock up 46 runs to steady the ship and help the Men in Blue hit back, while Dhawan's fine knock eventually came to an end when he was caught by Hashim Amla.

South Africa finished the innings strongly, however, taking Ravindra Jadeja (two), MS Dhoni (18) and Suresh Raina (six) late on, as well as Ajinkya Rahane, who saw his strong innings of 79 halted by the bowling of Dale Steyn.

The Proteas will now chase down a target of 308 when play resumes.
