Jonny Bairstow knock saves England on first day of second Test

Jonny Bairstow hits an unbeaten 97 to take England to 290-8 at stumps on day one of the second Test with New Zealand.

An unbeaten knock of 97 from Jonny Bairstow has kept England competitive at the end of the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand.

In the first Test earlier this month, England were bowled out for 58 and at one stage on Friday, it appeared that the tourists would fail to see out the first three sessions in Christchurch.

England reached 93-2 but that quickly became 95-5 as Trent Boult and Tim Southee threatened to run riot, but Bairstow led a counter-attack with an innings of 97 from 154 deliveries.

Mark Wood also chipped in with a quick-fire 52 for his first Test fifty, and debutant Jack Leach held firm in the closing overs to make 10 off 33 balls to join Bairstow at stumps with England on 290-8.

Earlier in the day, Alastair Cook was dismissed for just two and Dawid Malan was out for a first-ball duck while for New Zealand, Southee registered figures of 5-60.
