Mike Atherton: 'Joe Root is already important to England'

Former batsman Mike Atherton labels Joe Root as one of the best young players in the world.

Ex-England captain Mike Atherton has described Joe Root as one of the best young players in the world, as the Yorkshireman continues to score runs.

Root scored his second half-century of the opening Test against New Zealand yesterday, as he contributed 84 to England's total of 429-6.

The 24-year-old averages 55 in 24 Test matches and has recently been named as vice-captain.

Atherton told Sky Sports News: "In a very short period of time, Joe Root has become central to this England team. He's right there in the engine room all of the time.

"He's so important now and he's obviously in a rich, rich vein of form. He's right up there as one of the very best young players that the world game has got."

England lead New Zealand by 295 runs heading into day five.
