A fourth-wicket stand of 76 from Ian Bell and Joe Root has given England a lead of 271 runs at tea on day three of the first Ashes Test against Australia.
After bowling the Aussies out for 308 in the morning and with a lead of 122, England lost captain Alastair Cook before lunch and then saw Gary Ballance fall in the first over of the second session as he edged Josh Hazlewood through to Brad Haddin.

That brought Bell to the crease and he and Adam Lyth put on a quick 51 runs before Lyth was out for 37 when tourists captain Michael Clarke took a diving catch low to his left off the bowling of Nathan Lyon.
Since then, Bell (53*) has reached a half-century, while Root (31*) is looking comfortable after a big score of 134 in the first innings.
Ahead of the final session of the day, England are 149-3 and have a lead of 271 runs.
