Ricky Ponting believes that he can make a "big impact" in the upcoming home Test series with South Africa.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has said that he is "confident" of scoring runs in the upcoming three-Test series with South Africa.

The 37-year-old previously scored just 70 runs in four innings when he led his team on a tour of South Africa, fuelling speculation regarding his future with the Baggy Greens.

However, Ponting rediscovered his touch with the willow when India visited in December and January, scoring 544 in six innings, which included century and double century stands.

When asked if this series could be his last should he once again fail to perform with the bat, Ponting told Sky Sports News: "It's the same for all of us.

"I had a good summer last year but I'm not going to rest on that.

"I want to keep challenging myself and see where I can take my game. I'm confident that through this series I'll have a big impact."

Ponting was named Steve Waugh's successor as Test captain in 2004.
