Team GB canoeist Rachel Cawthorn keen to practise race plan in Baku

Team GB canoeist Rachel Cawthorn admits that she will be using the European Games to practise her race plan as she looks ahead to next year's Olympics.

Great Britain canoeist Rachel Cawthorn has said that she will be using the European Games in Baku to work on her race plan as she continues to look towards the Rio Olympics.

The 26-year-old, who is competing in the K1 200m and 500m events, missed out on the medals in London in 2012, finishing fifth in the K4 500m final, and sixth in the K1 500m.

Cawthorn told the Team GB website: "I'm really in the zone of racing after the World Cup. I've had a fourth and second in my recent World Cups, which gives me a good idea of where I'm racing.

"It's a great chance to practice my race plan, which I'm constantly making tweaks to ahead of the worlds and Olympic qualification later in the year.

"Everything is working towards Rio. After competing in London I understand it's a four year cycle with the Olympics at the end. When I was younger I was probably excited about every competition but now it feels like a longer journey and you have to trial things as you go."

Cawthorn begins her competition tomorrow.
