Stephen Smith signs with Matchroom Sport

British super featherweight champion Stephen Smith leaves Frank Warren's stable to join up with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sport.

Matchroom Sport have announced that British super featherweight champion Stephen Smith is the latest fighter to sign with his stable.

The 28-year-old is one of the three Smith brothers - along with Paul and Liam, who are still signed with rival promoter Frank Warren - holding a Lonsdale strap, and all three were signed to defend their titles on December 7.

However, 'Swifty' has now been added to the undercard to the Carl Froch and George Groves show, while a fight with Gary Sykes will likely be his next assignment.

"I've been watching Stephen over the last period and his fight against Gary Buckland was hugely impressive, with a great knockout victory," Hearn told Sky Sports News.

"We have an obligation to fight Gary Sykes, which we are happy to do so and will be speaking to the board about. He's also rated number nine in the WBC, number 11 in the WBA and number 11 in the WBO, so we have business to deal with and our aim is to get Stephen a world title shot in 2014.

"We believe the Sykes fight is a great one hopefully we can get that made for the Manchester Arena."

Lee Selby inflicted Smith's only defeat in 18 fights when they met at the Olympia two years ago.
