Carl Froch: 'James DeGale did just enough to win'

Former world champion Carl Froch believes that James DeGale did "just enough" to win the IBF super-middleweight title against Andre Dirrell.

Carl Froch thought that the IBF super-middleweight title was "slipping away" from James DeGale during the closing stages of his fight with Andre Dirrell.

Two knockdowns helped DeGale build an early lead over the American, but the 2008 Olympic gold medallist slowed during the middle rounds to give his opponent encouragement heading into the final minutes of the encounter.

However, DeGale rallied to run out the winner by unanimous decision, and Froch, who vacated the belt at the turn of the year, believes that the British fighter did just enough to deserve the win.

The 37-year-old told Sky Sports News: "It was a great win, but I was very concerned from four or five onwards. I was concerned he would chuck it away and couldn't come back enough to me, letting Dirrell take the centre of the ring and look like he was in control.

"It was difficult to score because not much was landing either way but I saw the fight slipping away from him. I wanted more from DeGale.

"I was disappointed with the fact he didn't throw enough shots or look like he wanted the world title. But he did enough. He just did enough on my card."

Promoter Eddie Hearn has announced that DeGale will return to London in October to make the first defence of his world title.
