Ricky Burns to return to lightweight division

Former world champion Ricky Burns admits that he is targeting a huge domestic fight in the lightweight division after opting against remaining at a higher weight class.

Ricky Burns has revealed that he wants to secure a high-profile domestic bout at the end of the year.

The Scot has opted to return to the lightweight division after losing to Omar Figueroa at a catchweight of 139lbs in May, and the former world champion has admitted that he wants to re-establish himself as a main contender 16 months after he lost his WBO crown to Terence Crawford.

The 32-year-old is quoted by Sky Sports News as saying: "There are so many big fights at lightweight, not only in the UK but on the world scene, and I can't wait to get involved in the thick of it.

"It was frustrating before to hear people say that I was being sent out to America to just be an opponent for Figueroa, but I proved them wrong.

"I will fight anybody, that's the only way you get the big fights. We aren't looking at a particular route or governing body - whatever comes our way, we will be ready."

Burns takes on Prince Ofotsu in Hull on Saturday night.
