Peter McGrail beats Kurt Walker for Commonwealth gold

England's Peter McGrail wins gold in the men's 56kg category at the Commonwealth Games, beating Northern Ireland's Kurt Walker in the final.

England's Peter McGrail has won the gold medal in the men's 56kg category at the Commonwealth Games courtesy of victory over Northern Ireland's Kurt Walker this evening.

The pre-tournament favourite went into the final having so far lived up to his billing, and the gold-medal bout was no different as he outboxed Walker to claim the win on points.

Walker fought valiantly against the odds and was awarded the win by the Australian judge at ringside, but the other four judges gave the fight to McGrail as he added the Commonwealth title to his growing list of accolades.

The European champion and World Championship bronze medallist kept out of range of Walker for the majority of the contest, using his impressive footwork to attack swiftly before moving out of the way of danger.

Judges from China, Poland, United States and Uzbekistan all ruled that McGrail had won every round, whereas the Australian judge only gave him the second round.

Walker was forced to settle for silver in the end, while the bronzes went to India's Hussamuddin Mohammed and Eric Basran of Canada.
