Anthony Fowler "so proud" to win gold

Anthony Fowler speaks to Sports Mole after claiming gold at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, admitting that he is "so proud" of his achievement.

Anthony Fowler told Sports Mole that he was "so proud" to win gold at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday evening.

Middleweight Fowler overcame Indian Vijender Vijender in Glasgow to claim the gold medal in emphatic style.

"I cannot put it into words. I am so, so happy," said Fowler, immediately after the bout.

"I am proud of myself for all of the years that I have put into this. I remember when I was 11 years old and a lad in my gym called Mark Moran, who had won a Commonwealth bronze and I thought he was a superstar and 12 years later I am here winning the gold. I am so, so proud of myself.

"Nothing fazes me when I am in the ring, I am in the zone," Fowler added when asked if he feels at home in that sort of atmosphere.

Fowler also insisted that it was important to distance himself from comparisons with his cousin, former Premier League and England footballer Robbie Fowler.

"It is so important. People say 'oh he's Robbie Fowler's cousin'. I am my own person and I am doing it all myself," he added.

Fowler regularly sparred with four-time world champion Carl Froch in the build-up to the competition.
