Azerbaijan boxer tipped for gold at Baku 2015 after dropping weight

Azerbaijan boxer Teymur Mammadov will drop down to light heavyweight after a "test fight" with teammate Abdulkadir Abdullayev.

Azerbaijan boxer Teymur Mammadov has dropped down to light heavyweight for the European Games in Baku after a "test fight" with teammate Abdulkadir Abdullayev.

Mammadov, who won bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games and silver at the Baku 2011 World Championships, competed in the arranged fight, and it was decided that Abdullayev would take the heavyweight position for Baku.

Farhad Ajalov, president of Mammadow's club Rabita, is quoted on the official Baku website as saying: "Teymur has never been a natural heavyweight.

"He never weighed more than 83-84 kilos in his bouts, so it was easier for him to lose a couple of kilos to box as a light heavyweight than to gain weight up to the real heavyweight division."

Mammadov also claimed gold at the Ankara 2011 World Championships.
